Working with Petrova Law

Attorney Elena Petrova runs a Moscow practice that serves clients in Russia and abroad, including California. Work starts with a consultation on your documents, continues under a written engagement agreement and is reported in English at every step. You always know what has been filed, what the court decided and what comes next.

This page explains how the process works from first contact to the end of a matter.

Preparing for the First Consultation

What to send in advance

Send a short description of the problem and the key documents by email: contracts, correspondence, court papers you received. Scans are enough at this stage. Mention any deadlines you know about, such as a hearing date or an appeal term.

Please do not send originals by post before we agree on the next step.

What the consultation covers

The consultation covers the facts, the applicable law, the likely procedure and the main risks. You receive an honest view of the options, including the option of not going to court. Russian ethics rules forbid promising a result, so the assessment speaks about chances and risks, not guarantees.

It can take place by video call or in writing, whichever suits your time zone.

Engagement Agreement

If you decide to proceed, we sign a written agreement as the Federal Law on Advocacy requires. It sets the scope of work, the fee, how expenses are paid and how the engagement can end. For court work, you will also sign a power of attorney, apostilled if executed abroad.

Communication During the Case

We agree on one main channel and a response time. Every filing and ruling is sent to you with a short English summary. Decisions such as settlement, appeal or withdrawal of a claim are made only with your written consent.

You can check the case yourself on kad.arbitr.ru or sudrf.ru at any time.

Fees and Expenses

Fees depend on the matter and are agreed before work begins: a fixed amount per stage, hourly billing or a combination with a success fee where the law allows it. State duties, experts, translators and notaries are paid separately. Payments go through the bank account of the bar formation, with documents for every transfer.

Areas of Work

The practice covers civil and commercial disputes in general and arbitrazh courts, property and family matters, debt recovery and enforcement of judgments. For matters outside these areas we say so at the first consultation.

Many clients live abroad and never visit Moscow during the case. Powers of attorney, evidence from abroad and remote participation in hearings are arranged as part of the engagement, and the final report explains how to receive awarded money or property.

When the Matter Ends

At the end you receive a written summary: the result at each instance, documents obtained, costs claimed from the other side and any remaining steps such as enforcement. Originals are returned to you, and the power of attorney can be revoked through a notary if no further work is planned.

How to Get in Touch

Write in English or Russian and describe the matter briefly. Include your time zone and any urgent dates so the reply can be prioritised.

The main channel of communication with the attorney is email: attorneypetrova1@gmail.com.
